about

Waiting Blues is an unconventional pandemic album. It begins with reflection as This Rainy Day chimes in – a song about moments and in particular a moment on tour in Melbourne before the pandemic hit. Lockdown hits and we begin The Waiting Blues – a blues ballad about losing your love, retracing your steps and hoping to stumble upon it once again.

Lonelier Than You chimes in with its sharp hits of the electric and a vocal croon that leaves the loneliness of The Waiting Blues in its wake, taking aim at the conspiracies of the pandemic in an almost jovial nature.

The comedown is real as the pandemic feels like it’s here to stay, confronted by the hauntingly acoustic folk song Gods Song. It questions the idea of blind faith, miracles and an almost apocalyptic hopelessness felt when the world had simply switched off.

Toowong menacingly builds from there – moving on from the questioning of God to the questioning of man – taking aim at propaganda, fear mongering and the hurting souls bad news is desperate to reach.

Like the phoenix, it’s time to rise and the moment the opening riff of Midnight Hymn Blues is heard, you know momentum is shifting. You’ve got through the hardest moments the pandemic has to offer and it’s time to dive back into the world of storytelling and find a new (or old) voice! Through thunderous electric guitar, wailing organs and intimidating drums, the song mocks false prophets as it rises, coming to a powerful crescendo.

The Mob Song quickly follows, telling a story of an outlaw on the run from an angry mob. It’s written akin to the outlaw himself leaving journalistic notes on his travels as he tries to escape the broken world he left behind. He made mistakes. So did the world around him. Right and wrong come into question as eventually the world catches up to him. As he meets his fate, he yells “Heaven won’t be my home, I’ll find myself under the stars” and his song – and story – fades to black.

Lastly, Those Are The Days is – in one word – reflection. A song about life flashing before your eyes. Waiting for the pandemic to end, life goes on by and before you know it, you’re an old man or woman slipping away. It’s commentary that flickers throughout the whole album – do you wait for things to change or do you chase the change you want? Do you reflect on what could have been, or do you make it so? Do you feed your soul, or do you fade away?

Waiting Blues is asking the question of listeners – do you want to wait for change, pray to God and reminisce on times gone, or do you want to fight for the life you want and make your own change?
